From the moment when a movement of rebellion begins, suffering is seen as a collective experience. Therefore the first progressive step for a mind overwhelmed by the strangeness of things is to realize that strangeness is shared with all men, and that human reality, in its entirety, suffers from the distance which separates it from the rest of the universe.
-Albert Camus, The Rebel
In my own struggles to make it through the philosophical
experience that is The Rebel this
quote stood out to me. As Heather and I thought about what to name our blog, my
mind immediately came back it to it. Though it may sound a bit overdramatic to
say so, I feel like any blog is just an attempt to take all the sometimes
overwhelming strangeness the world offers up and present it in a format that
creates a sense of shared experience and connectedness. Hopefully this blog
will give our family, friends, and others a chance to share in our lives as we
enter into a new chapter together.
For those who aren’t aware, I have been accepted into the
JET program, and so Heather and I are packing up and heading to Japan. I’ll be
teaching English to high school students in Tokushima Prefecture on the island
of Skikoku.
Before we leave we’ll be embarking on a 6-week road trip to
the east coast to see friends, family, and the first five shows of the summer
Phish tour.
Hopefully this blog will be an opportunity to write about
our adventures, along with thoughts we both have on reading, writing, life, the
universe, and everything. We hope you enjoy it!
